Short selling means selling a stock you don’t own (borrowed from a broker) with the aim of buying it back later at a lower price to profit from a decline.

If the stock falls as expected, the trader buys it back cheaper and returns it, pocketing the difference. If the price rises instead, losses can be unlimited in theory, making short selling considerably riskier than a normal buy trade.
