Series VII is the NISM certification for people who handle the operations side of a broking firm or depository participant: trade processing, clearing and settlement, margins, client account handling and risk controls. It is not a trading exam; it tests how the back end of the market works.
Think of what happens after you buy 100 shares of a hypothetical company at ₹500. The order is matched on NSE, the trade is confirmed, funds and securities move through the clearing corporation, and under T+1 settlement the shares reach your demat account the next working day. The Series VII candidate is expected to understand every step of that chain, plus what the broker must check before allowing the trade at all.
The syllabus typically covers market structure, the role of exchanges, clearing corporations and depositories, KYC and account opening, margin and risk management systems, and investor grievance processes. Exact exam pattern and validity details are on the NISM website, and it is worth checking the current version before you register.
Who usually takes it? Freshers applying for back-office, operations and risk roles at brokers, plus existing staff whose employers require it. A common mistake is treating it as easy because it has no option maths; the process and regulatory detail is dense and needs proper revision.
If you are targeting an operations role, our NISM preparation classes can help you plan which modules to take and in what order.
