A “lifetime free” demat account usually means you don’t pay an account opening fee or annual maintenance charges (AMC). It doesn’t mean every service on that account is free.
Even with zero AMC, you’ll typically still pay:
- DP charges each time you sell shares from your holdings
- Brokerage on trades, depending on the broker’s plan
- Statutory charges like STT, exchange fees, stamp duty and GST
- Charges for physical statements, pledging, or call-and-trade services
Some offers also come with conditions. The free AMC might apply only for the first year, only if you trade a minimum amount, or only on a particular plan. Read the tariff sheet carefully.
Example: an investor picks a broker because of “zero AMC” but sells small quantities of different stocks every week. The DP charges on those sells add up to more than a typical annual maintenance fee would have cost.
So pick a broker on total cost for the way you actually use the account, plus platform reliability and support quality. A free account with a buggy app can cost more in a bad trade than any AMC.
