Opening a demat account online takes five steps: choose a SEBI-registered broker, fill in the online form, complete e-KYC with your PAN and Aadhaar, do a quick video verification, and e-sign. With documents ready, most people finish the process in one sitting.
The usual steps:
- Pick a broker. Compare charges, platform quality and support, not just “zero brokerage” ads.
- Enter your mobile number, email and PAN on the broker’s website or app.
- Complete e-KYC by verifying Aadhaar through OTP or DigiLocker.
- Upload a cancelled cheque or bank statement, your signature and income proof if you want F&O.
- Do the in-person verification, usually a short video call or selfie video.
- E-sign the application using Aadhaar OTP.
- Receive your client ID and login details once the account is approved.
Approval time depends on the broker and whether your details match across documents.
One practical tip: read the tariff sheet before signing. Check account opening fees, annual maintenance charges, DP charges and any charges for call-and-trade or physical statements.
Also add nominees during sign-up. It’s much easier than doing it later.
