Yes, you can. Aadhaar makes online KYC faster, but it isn’t the only option. You can use other valid proofs of address and complete KYC offline or through a non-Aadhaar route.

What remains compulsory is your PAN. Without a PAN, you can’t open a demat account for trading in Indian markets.

Common alternatives to Aadhaar as address proof:

  • Passport
  • Voter ID card
  • Driving licence
  • Other officially valid documents accepted under KYC rules

The trade-off is speed and convenience. Aadhaar-based e-KYC with OTP and e-sign lets you finish online in one go. Without Aadhaar, many brokers ask you to submit physical forms, sign them by hand and courier them, or visit a branch. It can take several days longer.

Example: an NRI or someone whose Aadhaar address is outdated may prefer using a passport. Some brokers handle this online with document uploads; others insist on paper forms. Ask your broker before starting.

A tip: whichever document you use, make sure the name matches your PAN exactly. Mismatched names cause more rejections than missing documents.

KYC, account types and the paperwork behind trading are explained in our Diploma in Stock Market.
