What Is NISM Certification? Full Form, Popular Exams, Validity and Renewal (2026)
If you want a job in a broking firm, a mutual fund, an advisory or a research desk, one word will keep coming up: NISM. Many roles in Indian securities markets legally require an NISM certificate.
This guide explains what NISM certification is, the full form, which exams matter most, how long the certificate is valid, how renewal works and what happens if you fail.
NISM Full Form and What It Does
NISM stands for National Institute of Securities Markets. It was set up by SEBI in 2006 to build skills and set standards for people working in India’s securities markets.
NISM conducts certification exams under SEBI’s regulations for “associated persons”, the employees of brokers, mutual fund distributors, depository participants, investment advisers and research analysts. For many of these roles, passing the relevant NISM exam is mandatory, not optional.
Why NISM Certification Matters
- It is a legal requirement for many client-facing and operations roles.
- It is recognised across the industry by brokers, AMCs, banks and PMS firms.
- It proves practical knowledge of products, rules and investor protection.
- It is affordable and quick compared with long degree programs.

Exam Format: What to Expect
Most NISM exams are computer-based, multiple-choice tests taken at authorised test centres or through approved online proctoring. Typical features:
- Around 2 hours, with 50–100 questions depending on the module.
- A pass mark set per module (commonly 50% or 60%).
- Negative marking in some modules, such as Series VIII.
- Instant provisional result on screen.
Fees, question count and pass marks change by module, so always check the NISM certification portal before booking. For a detailed plan, see our NISM Series VIII syllabus and 30-day study plan.
NISM Certificate Validity: 3 Years
An NISM certificate is valid for three years from the date of passing. After that, you must re-validate it to keep working in a role that requires it. Our short answer is in the NISM validity FAQ.
How to Renew an NISM Certificate
You have two options, as per NISM:
- Attend a CPE or eCPE program. A one-day Continuing Professional Education program (about six hours), completed in the 12 months before your certificate expires. Your certificate is then re-validated for three years from its expiry date.
- Pass the exam again before the existing certificate expires.
If your certificate has already expired, in most cases you will need to pass the exam again.
What If You Fail an NISM Exam?
Failing is common on the first attempt, especially in Series VIII and XV. You can rebook the exam and appear again after paying the fee. See our FAQ on retaking a NISM exam. Mock tests and focused revision of formulas and regulations make the biggest difference.
