Paper Trading Course: Why We Practise Before You Use Real Money
Your first real trade usually goes one of two ways. Either it loses and you panic, or it wins and you start believing you have figured the market out. Both reactions are dangerous, and both happen before you have any real process.
That is why paper trading sits inside the live market practice module of Upside’s Intraday & Swing Trading Course. Think of it as a paper trading course built into a classroom programme: you plan, execute and review trades on live markets without risking capital.
This post explains why we treat practice as a step, not an optional extra, and how trade reviews, a journal and a risk calculator fit around it.
The Real Cost of Skipping Practice
Most beginners learn a setup on Monday and use real money on Tuesday. The market then teaches the lesson, and it charges a fee for every one.
SEBI’s FY26 study shows how expensive that can be. It found that 87.7% of individual F&O traders lost money, with net losses of ₹91,685 crore and an average loss of about ₹1.17 lakh per trader. Options accounted for roughly 92% of those losses.
Our breakdown of why 9 in 10 F&O traders lose money goes deeper. The pattern is familiar: real money arrives before real discipline.
What Paper Trading Actually Trains
Paper trading is not about pretending to be rich. It trains habits that are almost impossible to build while your own money is at stake:
- Planning before entering: writing down entry, stop-loss and target first
- Following the rule: no stop-loss, no trade
- Sizing correctly: working out quantity from risk, not from excitement
- Executing on time: acting on an Opening Range Breakout or VWAP reversal without hesitation
- Accepting losses: exiting at the stop instead of hoping
Once these are automatic, real money changes your emotions, but it no longer changes your process.
Paper trading alone at home has one weakness: nobody checks your work. It is easy to forget a losing trade or quietly move a stop on paper. A classroom paper trading course adds the missing piece, which is a mentor and peers reviewing what you actually did, not what you remember doing.
A Sensible Path From Paper to Real Money
There is no fixed number of paper trades that makes someone ready. Still, the path below is a sensible way to think about progress.
| Stage | What you do | Tool you lean on | Signal to move on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Learn | Study setups on live charts in class | Scanning checklists | You can explain each setup’s entry and exit |
| 2. Paper trade | Take planned trades without capital | Daily trading plan | Every trade has a written stop-loss |
| 3. Review | Discuss your trades with mentors | Trading journal template | Mistakes repeat less often |
| 4. Size | Fix risk per trade and daily loss limit | Risk calculator | Position size is calculated, never guessed |
| 5. Go small | Trade real money with very small size | All of the above | Process holds up under real emotions |
Notice that the signals are about behaviour, not profits. A paper profit made by breaking your rules is still a failed trade.
Why Trade Reviews Matter More Than the Trade
A trade is a single data point. A review is where learning happens.
In class, mentors look at what you planned, what you did and where the two differed. Over a few weeks, patterns appear: entering late, widening stops, overtrading after a loss.
Those patterns are usually psychological, which is why the course also covers fear, greed, FOMO and losing streaks. Our article on trading psychology explains why strategy alone rarely fixes them.

The Journal and the Risk Calculator
Two bonus tools come with the course, and both are designed for daily use.
Trading journal template
The journal records each trade: setup, entry, stop-loss, exit, reason and emotion. Reviewing it weekly shows what is working and what is costing you. Our guide on how to maintain a trading journal shows what good entries look like.
Risk calculator
The calculator turns your risk per trade into a position size. If you decide to risk a small, fixed share of capital per trade, it tells you how many shares that allows for a given stop-loss. The logic is explained in our guide to position sizing and the 1% rule.
Which Paper Trading Course Format to Pick

- Full Practical Course (6 weeks): strategies and supervised practice.
- Mentorship Program (8–12 weeks): the most room for paper trading and reviews.
Fees are not published, so ask the team for the current fee of each format. Our FAQ on mock and paper trading practice answers related questions.
