NISM Series 8 Coaching: Prepare for the Equity Derivatives Exam

You opened the Series VIII workbook on a Sunday, got through futures pricing without much trouble, and then hit option payoffs. Two hours later you were still staring at a diagram of a bull call spread, wondering whether the exam will really expect you to work these out under time pressure.

It will, and that is the moment most people start looking for NISM Series 8 coaching. At Upside, Series VIII (Equity Derivatives) is one of the two series covered in our classroom NISM Exam Preparation Course, alongside Series XV.

This post explains where Series VIII candidates usually struggle, how classroom coaching helps, and how to decide whether you need it at all.

What the Series VIII Exam Asks of You

Series VIII focuses on equity derivatives. Broadly, it tests your understanding of futures and options, common strategies, how derivatives are traded, cleared and settled, and the rules around them. Always check the latest NISM workbook for the current syllabus.

The general exam format, as stated on our course page, looks like this:

  • An online exam of about 100 multiple-choice questions
  • 120 minutes to finish
  • Negative marking, generally 25%
  • A passing score of 50–60%, depending on the series
  • A certificate valid for 3 years

Where Candidates Usually Lose Marks

Most Series VIII candidates do not fail on definitions. They lose marks in three places.

Numerical questions. Payoffs, break-even points and margin calculations need practice, not just reading. One slip turns a correct method into a wrong answer and a negative mark.

Options concepts. Moneyness, the Greeks and the difference between buying and selling options confuse many first-timers. Our explainers on option Greeks and option buying vs selling are useful background.

Time and guessing. With negative marking, random guesses cost you. Candidates who never practised timed tests often rush the last section or guess too much.

Self-Study vs NISM Series 8 Coaching

Plenty of people pass with self-study. Coaching earns its place when one of the gaps below applies to you.

SituationSelf-study may be enoughCoaching likely helps
BackgroundYou already work with F&O dailyYou are new to derivatives
NumericalsYou are comfortable with payoff mathsPayoffs and margins feel shaky
DisciplineYou study consistently aloneYou need fixed class times
Exam techniqueYou have taken timed MCQ examsYou are unsure how to handle negative marking
DeadlineNo fixed dateYour employer needs the certificate soon

If most of your ticks land in the right column, structured classes will usually save you time.

How Upside’s Series VIII Coaching Works

The NISM Exam Preparation Course is classroom-based and typically runs 4–6 weeks. It includes:

  1. Study material organised for revision.
  2. Mock tests that mirror the real exam pattern.
  3. A negative-marking strategy, so you know when to attempt and when to skip.
  4. Personalised mentoring for the topics you find hardest.

Batches run in the evenings and on weekends, which suits people already working in banks, broking firms or other jobs. The course fee is not published, so ask the team for the current fee.

A Simple Mock-Test Routine for Series VIII

Mock tests only help if you use them properly. A routine that works for many candidates looks like this:

  1. Take the test in one sitting, with a 120-minute timer and no notes.
  2. Score it after negative marking, so you see your real result.
  3. Sort every wrong answer into one of three buckets: concept gap, calculation slip or careless reading.
  4. Fix the biggest bucket first. Concept gaps go back to the workbook; calculation slips need more numerical practice.
  5. Repeat a few days later and compare the buckets, not just the score.

The skipped-question count matters too. If you skip too many, you may fall short of the pass mark; if you skip too few, negative marks pile up. Finding your balance is a skill, and it improves with each timed test.

Beyond the Certificate: Understanding Derivatives

Passing Series VIII proves you understand the concepts. It does not make you a profitable trader, and it is worth being clear about that.

SEBI’s FY26 study found that 87.7% of individual F&O traders lost money, and options caused about 92% of those losses. Contract rules also keep changing: Nifty 50 weekly options now expire on Tuesday, Sensex weekly options on Thursday, and Bank Nifty and other indices are monthly-only.

If you want practical trading skills as well, the Options & Futures course runs 1.5 months and covers 24+ strategies, Greeks, option chains and hedging, at ₹16,000 one-time or ₹18,000 in instalments.
