Nifty Options Trading Course: Index Options and Weekly Expiry

It is Tuesday, 2:15 pm. A Nifty out-of-the-money call you bought for a few rupees in the morning looked like a lottery ticket. Now it is worth almost nothing, and you are watching the clock run down to expiry.

Expiry-day trading in index options draws many new traders, and it is where many of them lose the most. A proper Nifty options trading course should teach you how index options behave across the whole week, not just how to chase expiry-day moves. Upside covers NIFTY and BANKNIFTY index options inside its Options & Futures course.

This guide explains how Nifty weekly expiry works now, what to learn first, and how to keep risk under control.

How Index Option Expiry Works in 2026

Expiry schedules have changed, and many traders still work from old assumptions. As of now:

IndexExchangeWeekly optionsWeekly expiry day
Nifty 50NSEYesTuesday
SensexBSEYesThursday
Bank NiftyNSENo – monthly onlyNot applicable
Other indicesNSE/BSENo – monthly onlyNot applicable

Bank Nifty and other indices no longer have weekly options, which concentrates a lot of short-term activity in Nifty. Read Bank Nifty weekly expiry is gone for what that means in practice.

Expiry rules can change again, so always check the latest exchange circulars before you trade.

Why Nifty Weekly Options Are Hard for Beginners

Weekly options have short lives. That makes them cheap to buy, but it also means time decay is fast and price swings can be sharp.

Common traps include:

  • Buying far out-of-the-money options because they are cheap, when they often expire worthless.
  • Holding through the final hours hoping for a reversal while premium decays.
  • Selling naked options on expiry day without a hedge, exposing yourself to a sudden spike.
  • Oversizing because each lot looks inexpensive.

SEBI’s FY26 study found that 87.7% of individual F&O traders lost money, and options caused around 92% of losses. Index options are a large part of that activity.

None of these traps is about intelligence. They come from not knowing how premium, time and volatility interact in a short-dated contract, which is exactly what structured practice addresses.

What a Nifty Options Trading Course Should Teach First

Before any strategy, you should understand the mechanics that drive index option prices.

  1. Contract basics – calls, puts, strikes, premium and expiry.
  2. Option Greeks – how Delta, Gamma, Theta and Vega change through the week, especially near expiry. See option Greeks explained simply.
  3. Option chain reading – how to choose strikes for a defined view.
  4. Buying vs selling – the different risk on each side of an index option.
  5. Hedging – capping the worst-case loss on a position.
  6. Position sizing – deciding lots from risk, not from premium price.

Upside’s course covers all six, along with 24+ strategies and stock options.

The Weekly Cycle: How Behaviour Changes Toward Tuesday

Index options do not behave the same on Wednesday as they do on Tuesday afternoon. A good course shows you this on live charts.

Point in the weekly cycleWhat tends to matter more
Early in the cycleDirection and volatility; time decay is slower
Middle of the cycleTime decay picks up; strike choice matters more
Expiry day (Tuesday)Gamma and rapid premium moves; risk is highest

Understanding this cycle helps you avoid treating every day like expiry day. It also helps you decide whether a weekly or monthly contract better fits your view.

Risk Rules for Index Options

Index options move quickly, so rules must be set before the trade, not during it.

  • Fix a maximum loss per trade and size lots to that figure. The guide on position sizing and the 1% rule explains how.
  • Set a daily and monthly loss limit, and stop when you hit it.
  • Avoid naked selling on expiry day unless you fully understand the hedge.
  • Never trade with money you cannot afford to lose.

Recent regulatory changes affect index option trading too; see SEBI’s 2026 F&O overhaul.
